Profile of YOSHIAKI OCHI
(Composer, Percussionist, Member of Japan Composers Association)
Yoshiaki Ochi has been conducting field work in many parts of the world since
1979, experiencing and performing various kinds of percussion music. In 1983,
he st-arted using ethnic musical instrments, natural materials such as water and
stone, and art objects on the stage, to create a new style of music with the image
of linking human with the earth. That year, he gave a performance titled "Natural
Sonic".
From 1984 to 1990, he won worldwide fame as a composer and performer for the fashion
show of the ISSEY MIYAKE Collection. In 1990, he released a CD album, "Natural
sonic" and directed a performance under the same title. The following year,
in the Sound and Environment Forum, he presented the "Performance of the
sound of the earth" in 1992, he perticipated in the Campaign for the global
environ-ment as a composer of its theme song and as a producer of a related television
program. These events made him popular as a leading figure of ambient music. For
the past few years, he has been activity working on his own pieces such as the
performance titled "Visual Sonic" at the La MaMa Theater in New York
in 1993, which won him high esteem from journalists in and outside Japan. In 1995,
he directed the ambient opera " Partheno Genesis" at the Artsphere in
Tokyo. He also devotes himself to educathion, conducting workshops and a series
of concerts for kids titled "Art for Kids". Other areas of his energetic
activities include production of music for TV, Radio and CD-ROM, and creation
of enviromental for aquariums and at-riums, as well as collaborations with other
artists from various fields. In October 1996, he released two albums, "AQUA-water
from sanctuary" and "Natural Sonic2".
In April 1997, he produced his performing arts "Natural Sonic" at the
LaMaMa Theater in New York and open to the public on internet his homepage (http://www.j-wave.co.jp).
And others, the workshop and concert for parent and child succeeded at Hudson
(Time and Space Unlimited Theater), and Hawaii Island (Hawaii University and Kalani
Honua Cultural Center), In June 1998, he performed titled "Natural Sonic"
and did workshop "Play with Rhythm and Sound" at Jooksan Intenational
Arts Festival in Korea. In August 2000, "Natural sonic 2000" and did
workshop "Children and their parents making musical instruments and learning
performance method" at Iksan Int'l Performing Arts Festival for Children
& Young Adults in Korea.
